Introduction to Lake Lewisville

 

Lake Lewisville is a gorgeous place to visit throughout the year and provides a delightful family friendly location in Denton County. Lake Lewisville is previously known as Lake Dallas. The lake is within a North Texas reservoir located near Dallas and was created in the late 1940s. It was created when the Lewisville Dam was created. The lake is managed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

 

The water volume of Lake Lewisville is approximately 555 thousand acres per foot. The surface elevation is slightly over five hundred twenty feet (522), and the maximum depth is around sixty-five feet.

 

Lake Lewisville is approximately twenty miles away from Dallas and Arlington, Texas and thirty miles from Fort Worth. The lake location is on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River.  


 

History of Lake Lewisville

 

In 1927, the Garza Dam construction was completed which created Lake Dallas. The dam was over ten thousand feet long with a spillway of over five hundred fifty feet. At the time, the shorelines spanned over forty miles long around the waters. 

 

Later, more water storage was needed which followed with the construction of the Garza-Little Elm dam. The second construction combined Lake Dallas to Little Elm Creek as well as Hickory Creek. In 1957, Lake Dallas was renamed Lewisville Lake.

Lake Lewisville is a delightful place for fishing many kinds of fish. Fish inhabitants include largemouth bass, hybrid bass, white bass, spotted bass, white crappie, blue catfish, and channel catfish.

 

Fishing for catfish, crappie, and white bass is considered excellent. Angling for largemouth bass as well as spotted bass and hybrid striped bass is good. 

 

In several places around the lake, fishermen will find standing timbers. These areas are good for catching crappie as well as largemouth bass. White bass schools near the main part of the lake during the summer months.
